Today’s Agenda

1)      Get out your homework: review for main ideas.

2)      Get into groups and discuss what you noticed.

3)      Other examples of Critical Thinking:

a.       Paul Krugman’s “The Moment of Truth”

b.      Bee Wilson’s “The Swill is Gone”

4)      What can these articles teach us about critical thinking? How do they apply to what we

have been studying?

Part 2:

1)      We are going to begin asking questions of practitioners regarding critical thinking.

2)      We are going to begin planning our interview – due one week from today! –  to see what critical thinking looks like to that person, and to ask other questions you are interested in

The importance of interviewing!

Interviewing is an essential and much-neglected professional skill.  Also, being interviewed – handling it well – is critical to professional advancement, because there are “gate-keepers” all along the way in every profession.  You will improve your ability to be interviewed both by practice yourself (later on) and by thinking about interviewing from the interviewer’s point of view (here).

Step One:

1)      Write out the interview questions you plan to use.  (Why do skilled interviewers think this is essential?)

2)      Make contact with your interviewee if you haven’t already done so, and arrange to meet.  You will need about half an hour.

[How can you find someone to interview? Office hours! Or if off campus, telephone for appointment!]

Some suggestions:

What was the biggest change you had to make in yourself to become a _________?

What else could I do to prepare for life as a __________________?

What parts of professional preparation in your field should be called “training,” and which should be called “education”?

Is mentoring useful?

Homework For Tuesday:

1) 25 questions printed up

2) 1 page jounral entry on Digitial Culture

3) Get on your interview ASAP!
