Unit Three: Workplace Literacy:

The Challenger Disaster

Let’s begin by watching a video of the challenger disaster:

Let’s quickly review a timeline of the major events

Timeline

Assignment:

After viewing the video, write for five minute, nonstop, about your reaction to the event. When writing, try to support your reaction with evidence from the video. Finally, consider what you would do to address this problem.

 Let’s consider some of the important background information:  Handout

What are some of our observations about the disaster?

Let’s write in response to the following questions:

“If the engineers involved knew that the O-rings were not designed to function at ambient temperatures under 53 degrees F and the temperature on the morning of the 28th was below this threshold, why wasn’t the launch cancelled and the disaster avoided?”

 Assignment:

 While viewing Regan’s address, createa guide to facilitate your analysis. In the right column list the words or passages you find significant. In the middle explain why these items seem significant. In the left column include notes on group and class discussions of these items.

 

 

Homework:

Your homework for next class is to turn the jounral entry you began today on the topic of why the Challenger was launched into a 1.5 page paper, double-spaced. You should be following all of the basic writing techniques we have covered to-date.
